Dolby technology adapts the audio to the actual number of speakers present on the playback device. So AC3 and EAC3 will play fine on Dolby-approved stereo devices.

Dolby surround is a upmixer that takes a stereo signal and creates a surround sound field from it. It's really an evolution of Dolby pro logic matrix decoders. Reply. Save.
DolbyAtmos allows you to position each instrument in a virtual space (with assigned height, width, and depth). The Atmos renderer does the hard work of making the mix sound clean, clear, and three-dimensional on headphones and speakers. It's really kind of magical how well it works. I'm an old fart.

But i have found that even if i Have Dolby digital selected from my receiver it still reports in information that the receiver is taking a signal from directv do 5.1 and playing it out as 5.1.2 which means it using the ceiling speakers put in for the 3D audio on Atmos and X even when basic signals from AnAtmos track consists of a "bed" stream and metadata: In cinemas, the bed stream is typically 7.1.2, which is the maximum that Atmos can be encoded with.
